Feast of Sant Nikolaas

December 6--Feast of Sant Nikolaas, whose name long ago morphed into "Santa Claus."

Sant Nikolaas is the patron saint of children, but also of sailors, travelers, bakers, brewers and pawnbrokers.

Today we visit the bakers and brewers.  

Tomorrow, the pawnbrokers.

    And let us not forget, especially we jazz lovers, the ever-present Afro-Nederlander companion of Sant Nikolaas, "Swaarte Piet" ("Black Pete") - probably the inspiration for Miles Davis's role of the jive-talking busker in Bill Murray's modern-dress adaptation of Dickens titled "Scrooged."
