British tabloids are fulminating over the casting of Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher in a forthcoming biopic of the prime minister known as the Iron Lady. "What cheek," they cry, "casting an American as our revered--well, somewhat revered, but totally English--PM!" The country's first choice for the role of Mrs. (now Baroness) Thatcher: John Cleese.
More anger is expected when it is revealed who will play Denis, a toss-up between Billy Bob Thornton and Eddie Murphy.
In retaliation, UK filmmakers are planning a biopic of Eleanor Roosevelt. Cast in the leading role: Dame Edna.
Neither Billy Bob nor Eddie Murphy, as it transpires, will play Denis Thatcher. Jim Broadbent (Professor Horace Slughorn at Harry Potter's alma mater, Hogwarts) has got the nod to play opposite Ms. Streep, dashing not only my hopes but those of John Cleese fans everywhere.
ReplyDeletePhyllida Lloyd, who propelled the cast of "Mama Mia," will wield the director's megaphone.
Jim Broadbent has provided a (possibly authentic) indication of the British public's preferences.
"I think years ago a film about Thatcher was attempted," Jim recounts, "and they had a phone-in vote on a BBC morning news programme, 'Who do you think should play Margaret Thatcher?' And Meryl actually came out on top!"
Alas for my wish to see two thespians of equal genius (and height) play the starring roles: John Cleese and Tilda ("Orlando") Swinton!
Likewise Terry ("Monty Python and the Holy Grail") Gilliam would be my choice to direct a story said to be focused on the Falklands War.
This film might be pretty good. Phyllida Lloyd will have the entire House leaping into the Thames while singing an Abba tune. But Terry Gilliam's vision of the Falklands War could be even more evocative if it reflected the memorable battlements scenes of "Monty Python and the Holy Grail."
ReplyDeleteI believe this is my debut post so I'll just say, "What nonsense!"
