Calling Uncle Sigmund

Recommended reading for our age, following the Brexit vote in Britain, Colombian voters' rejection of an end to a fifty-year war, and the lemming-like rush to Donald Trump: "Beyond the Pleasure Principle," by Sigmund Freud, described as "the pioneer study of the death instinct in man.'

  1. We can see a sort of rationale in the Brexit vote. Many Britons just don't want someone in Brussels telling them what to do. Margaret Thatcher argued in the first place against any political union with Europe. I don't believe the Colombians have rejected peace out of hand. They just won't accept the proposed terms; they want the treaty renegotiated. The rush to Trump? Who knows? Freud's theory is as good as any.
